During the Meiji era, Roko Tsukamatsu, an editor at the Shinano Mainichi Shimbun (daily newspaper), did a careful study of Issa and wrote a series of 120 articles of Issa beginning on April 1, 1900. About how Issa looked, he interviewed the old local people and abolishded the common belief at that time of Issa as "lean and benevolent-looking," concluding: "Issa was a man of middle height, a little fat, having a broad face with plump cheeks, etc." In other words a typical farmer-looking Issa, which the sculptor Mokuzan Murase made into Issa's sculpture.
