Where
is Mookini Heiau? Mookini
Heiau is on the Big Island of Hawaii, a 30 minutes’ flight east of
Honolulu on Oahu Island. Now that the Japan Airlines’ direct flights to
Kailua Kona on Hawaii Island have been cancelled, Hawaiian Airlines direct
flights are available from December 2016. On
Hawaii Island, while Hilo is on the east coast, Kailua Kona is on the west
coast. As the windward east coast is in a rainy area and the leeward west
coast in a dry area, the new famous hotels are located on the west coast. Mookini
Heiau is in the northwest corner of Hawaii Island, a short distance from
these new hotels. It
is located a little west of the town of Hawi where Kamehameha
the Great is said to be born, his statue standing in the neighboring town of Kapaau. To Hawi, it
is about 30 minutes by car on Hawaii State Highway
Route 270 from Kawaihae,
or on State
Highway 250 from Waimea
on the northern route, State Highway
19, from Kailua Kona to Hilo. From
Hawi, take Hawaii State Highway 270, and turn into Upolu Airport Road, past
the wind farm. Turn left to the dirt road toward west. You’ll find the
signboard of the heiau on the left, and soon that of the Kamehameha
birthplace. What
Is the History of Mookini Heiau? Since
the Hawaiians had no written characters, the Hawaiian history has been
conveyed orally from generation to generation. The history of the Hawaiian
kings had also been available as an oral tradition, and was put into a
written language as the Kumulipo only in
the latter half of the 19hth century, after the missionaries had brought the
alphabet in the first half of the same century. Mookini
Heiau was built in 480 A.D. by Kuamoo Mookini,
according to its history which has been transmitted orally by its kahunas
(priests). He was not from Tahiti, but from the Persian Gulf in Middle East.
That oral story tells that the one-foot tall walls of the heiau were built
overnight by the little people, Menehune. What
Happened After That? Hawaii
is in general said to have been populated by the people of Polynesia in two waves,
from the 5th to 11-12th centuries. The first wave was from the Marquesas Islands,
and the second wave from the Society
Islands, such as Tahiti.
Among the latter people was Paao,
the priest, who reconstructed the walls of the heiau from three feet to six
feet in height. Minehune again took action and carried the necessary stones
from Pololu
Valley, which is located in the east. Paao also introduced the custom of luakini, the human
sacrifice. He did all these things, of course, under the protection of the
Mookini family who is said to have come from Middle East (refer to the previous page). What,
Human Sacrifice? How Savage! Yes.
Human sacrifice was dedicated on such exceptional times as when there was
prolonged famine or war. The human sacrifice was selected from the Slave
class, which was composed from the people who lost the war, or who had broken
the taboo. There was also a heiau, such as Puuhonua
O Honaunau, where people could avoid caught as slaves. The
native Hawaiians and Hawaiian language belong to the Austronesian
Language Group and the Austronesian Group,
respectively, as the most recent linguistic and anthropological studies show.
The
Proto-Austronesian language, which originated in souther china or
Thailand was transmitted to Taiwan first, then to the Southeast Asian
islands, and advanced west Madagascar,
Africa, or east via New
Guinea (where it mingled with the native New Guinea languages on the
coastal areas) to Melanesia.
From there it moved north to Micronesia and east to Polynesia, from there it
moved to the Hawaiian Islands. It
Is Now a American National Monument? In
1962, Mookini Heiau, together with smaller Mahukona Heiau and Kukuipahu Heiau
nearby, was designated as United States
National Historical Landmark, and in 1966 registered as a United
States National Register of Historic Places. Return to Home Page |
