小田急線で4つ北(新宿寄り)の湘南台駅にある慶応大学SFC(湘南藤沢キャンパス、インターネットと外国語教育で有名)の人達でも買いにくるのでしょうか。

(Reviewer's Guide)
Coming soon!

Move to the Japanese Part.
A Book Written in Japanese
Published by O'Reilly Japan
Publicity Activities
The publicity of this book is done by O'Reilly Japan, Inc, and its marketing/distribution affiliate, Ohmsha, Ltd. Smaller scale publicity activities are carried out by us three co-authers and our associates who wrote certain language sections.
This book is reviewed in both Japanese and English language magazines.
- Book reviews appeared in the Japanese magazines and webs, such as DOS/V Magazine (Softbank) and Gengo - Language (Taishukan).
- "The Multilingual Web Guide" by Yoshi Mikami, in the Multilingual Communications & Technology magazine #18 (Volume 9, Issue 2), pp. 30-31, published in Feburuary, 1998, by Multilingual Computing, Inc.
Distribution Status
The distribution of this book is done by Ohmsha, Ltd., O'Reiily Japan's marketing partner. In the Japanese text above, it is explained that the distribution to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Nagano, etc. seems to be performed well by Ohmsha's expert hands.
Reviewer's Guide
For General-Purpose Magazines: A unique book was published in August, 1997, in Japan, which will appeal to a variety of people, from those who love to surf the overseas World Wide Web on the Internet or create homes pages for the worldwide audience, to those who are simply learning or teaching foreign languages. It is "The Multilingual Web Guide" in Japanese, by Yoshihiko Mikami, Kenji Sekine and Nobutoshi Kohara (Tokyo: O'Reilly Japan, 1997, 3,900 yen plus tax, ISBN: 4-900900-23-0; see the authors' support Web page at http://www.threeweb.ad.jp/logos/mlweb/). O'Reilly Japan, Inc., (http://www.oreilly.co.jp) is the Japanese subsidiary of O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. (http://www.ora.com), based in California, U.S.A., famous for publishing many excellent UNIX and Internet books.
This book is divided into three parts and comes with a CD-ROM. In Part 1, the readers are guided through viewing from the English, French, German, Spanish, Russian and other language worlds in Europe and the Americas, to the Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Korean, Indian languages, Amharic and other language worlds of Middle East, Asia and Africa. For each language, the required browser settings and fonts are explained. Part 2 is where we understand in plain terms the technical inner workings of language processing in the Internet home pages, for the PC platforms from Windows and Macintosh, to OS/2 Warp and UNIX.
In Part 3, we are lead through actually creating the English, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and Russian pages, after learning the basics of HyperText Markup Language, which is needed to write the Internet home pages. The attached CD-ROM is full of software programs mentioned in the book, in trial versions.
This book is not only interesting, as it includes the description of many considerations of informing your ideas to the worldwide audience via the Internet home pages (Sections 7.1 and 8.1), but also a good contribution from Japan to the otherwise English-oriented Internet age, as it tries to encourage the readers to probe the world's other languages and cultures. As we all know, the information available in English on the Internet is only a minuscule part of all the information available from the non-English part of the world. [About 300 words]
Note 1: The books and magazines in this field are: Emmanuel Uren, Robert Howard and Tiziana Perinotti, "Software Internationalization and Localization: an Introduction" (Van Nostrand Rheinhold, 1993); Ken Lunde, "Japanese Language Processing" (O'Reilly & Associates, 1993); Kimiko Nishikimi, Naoto Takahashi, Satoru Tomura, Kenichi Handa, Seiji Kawai and Shinichi Mukaigawa, "Creating a Multilingual Environment: Multilingualization Using X Windows, Wnn and WWW Browsers" (Tokyo: Prentice-Hall Shuppan, 1996), a book written in Japanese, but part of which is available in English on the Internet; and "Multilingual Communications and Technology," a magazine published by Multilingual Computing, Inc., Sandpoint, Idaho, U.S.A.
Note 2: The Reviewer's Guide is a documentation that a reviewer uses to evaluate the contents of a product. It is a practice often used by Microsoft Corporation, IBM Corporation and others in the computer indutry. Two other Reviewer's Guides of the Multilingual Web Guide are available above in Japanese, one intended for the reviewers of the PC magazines and the other for the language/linguistics magazines.
Some Thoughts on Translated Editions
I believe in the theory that the author should not talk about translation because I may interfere with the translator's creative thinking. However, as the translation of this book into English/French/German is being evaluated in some earnestness in November, 1997, I feel that I need to place here some of my thoughts, as the entire publishing world is so much used to translating the U.S. English editions to the other langauges, but not the other way.
- Let's recall first how, for example, a U.S. English book on computers or the Internet is translated into its Japanese edition. When the U.S. author talks about some application software running on the U.S. English versions of Windows 95 or Mac OS 8, the translated book will address how such software runs on the Japanese version of Win95 or Mac OS 8. When the U.S. author writes on the Web search systems (i.e., Web "search engines," if you like) such as Yahoo! and AltaVista, the Japanese edition will carry the descriptions of not only Yahoo! and AltaVista, but also the Japanese unique search systems, such as Goo and ODIN.
Such additions and sometimes deletions are frequently done in the Japanese computer publishing industry, because it makes so much sense. I'm not sure how such additions and deletions are treated in the translation right agreement, but I'm sure that this kind of practice is also done in France and Germany.
- This means that the whole translation process will include not only the word-for-word translation, but also the technical check if the software works on the local OS version and the reasonableness check if special local descritions should be added. In Japan, this translation process is managed by the "production company," designated by the publisher, with the language translator(s) and technical person(s) working closely together. For example:
- In Part 1, a section on "Browsing the Japanese World" is missing in the original Japanese edition for a good reason! Since you most likely need it in the translated edition, create it as an extension of the "Browsing the Chinese and Korean Worlds," using the same software. For the Japanese newspapers and magazines, see my Japanese Language web page.
- In Part 2, Episode 4 "The Internet and the Half-Size Katakana Characters" (p. 145) may be a target of deletion in the translated edition, because it is so unique to the Japanese language environment. However, its companion descriptiion "The Internet and the Russian Characters," which I covered briefly in the support web (send as attached file), can be expanded and used for this episode, related to the section on the computer character sets.
- In Chapter 6 of Part 2, the Japanese language input/output description is missing in the book, but is provided in the support web.
- In Part 3, Section 7.6.6 "Translation Dictionaries and Translation Software" is written as they are available in Japan. It must be re-written to the U.S./French/German environments.
- In the support web here is such other additional information as 7.6.7 "OCR Programs" and the new Conclusions section, with a reference to this support web, which all failed to be included in the first printing for lack of page space, but may appear in the second printing.
- Here is my suggestion, not as an author, but as a technical advisor to the foreign edition publisher, on how to proceed, in case the translator is located in Tokyo, while the publisher is, for example, in Paris:
- During the translation contract process, the translator provides a list of the sections which will be or not be translated with a simple reason for each and his/her suggestion, and of the sections which are missing for apparent reasons, but should appear in the translated edition, such as:
- pp. 8-12 (Episode 1: English-Japanese Translation Software on the Japanese Browsers) will not be translated because they are described as they are available in Japan. A suggestions is to describe it in the French environment if such software is available.
- On page 91, a section on "Browsing the Japanese World" is missing. A suggestion is to add it in the manner of the Browsing "the Chinese World" (pp. 83-91) or "the Korean World" (pp. 91-96), using mostly the same software (DynaLab's AsiaSurf, Apple's Chinese Language Kit, etc.).
- Page 145 (Episode 4: The Internet and the Half-Size Katakana Characters) will not be translated because it is so unique to Japanese. A suggestion is to replace it with "How Can I send Russian characters in my French e-mail." A brief summary (send it as an attached file) is available in the support web (part.html).
- On page 203, the Japanese keyboard and input methods are missing. Add the French translation of the latter from the support web. Note: the keyboard layouts are all taken from the IBM DOS 7.0 manual, under permission from IBM Japan, Ltd.
- pp. 236-239 (7.6.6 Translation Dictionaries and Translation Software) will not be translated because they are relavent to the Japanese environment. A suggestion is to add this section in the French environment.
- On p. 239, 7.6.7 OCR Programs is missing in the book, but its French translation will be provided from the support web (part.html).
- On page 285, 8.9 Conclusions should be replaced by the description available in the support web (part.html).
- The publisher will evaluate the translator's suggestions, agrees or disagrees, and make necessary actions, as well as make sure the technical writer in Paris tests if all software works under the French (and, if appropriate, English) versions of Windows, Mac OS, etc.
- For French, for example, I have recently obtained the following information, which I find very helpful:
- In summary, there are several items that should be considered for revising the Japanese first edition (dated August, 1997) or for its translated edition:
- For page v in "Foreword," add "Mr. Eiji IRIE (the Eastern European languages)," right after "Mrs. Ginko NAGATA (Portuguese)." Change for a translated edition Mr. Rin KATOKU's name to "HE Delun" which is his Chinese name. Add: Mrs. Keiko SEKINE tirelessly prepared the Lnguages vs. Web Browsers table and tested all URLs in the book. For the French edition of this book, Mrs. Keiko ITO provided updated URLs as well as excellent French translation.
- On page 140, revise Figure 3-4 ISO 8859-1 by: moving the characters in 20-7F (hexadecimal) to A0-FF; moving the characters in 20-7F of Figure 3-6 (on p. 146) to Figure 3-4's same positions; and keeping 80-9F blank. On page 142, revise Figure 3-5 KOI8-R for Russian, by copying the characters in 20-7F in Figure 3-2 (p. 135) to Figure 3-5's same positions. (On pages 193-194, the characters in Tables 5-1 and 5-2 should be revised according to the instructions at part2.html#p193 and part2.html#p194. In addition, on p. 156, the 3rd line of Table 3-2 Unicode 2.0 (ISO 10646-1) should read 0080-00FF, in stead of 0008-000F.)
- For pages 237 and 239, move IBM Translation Manager on p. 237 to p.239, with the description in the part3.html page.
- For page 235, the description in "Conclusions" should be replaced with the one in the foreword.html page. I do plan to maitain a support page, at least for the Japanese, English and French editions.
- For pages 311-312, the text in "Introducing the Authors," especially the one for Nobutoshi Kohara, should be replaced with the one in the foreword.html page.
These five items above were discussed with the editor of the Japanese edition, on August 28, 1997, and agreed to be included in the book's any future revisions or translations.
There are a few more additional items that I should also mention:
- For pages 165 and 166, the functional summaries of Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer 4.0, respectively, are offered on the part2.html page. (NC's Composer and IE4's FrontPage Express/Web Publishing Wizard are also mentioned for p. 234 on the part3.html page.) A few words on Java 1.1 and Acrobat are provided for p. 187 (Episode 5) on the part1.html page. For page 229 (Episode 7), HTML 4.0 was officially adopted as W3C's Recommendation in December, 1997, which is explained on the part3.html page. These are the major things that happened during 1997 in the multilingual computer processing arena after this book's final draft was reviewed, approximately in April, 1997.
- For page 239, Section 7.6.7 OCR software is offered on the part3.html page. This had been omitted in the Japanese first edition, for lack of space,
- For pages 300-304, the CD-ROM contents were selected for the Japanese versions of Windows 95, OS/2 Warp, Mac OS and UNIX. (If interested, look into the .../logos/multi/index.html page, written in Japanese, for the software selection process that we went through for the Japanese edition.) They must be revised and tested under the French versions of Win95-OS/2-MacOS-UNIX for this book's French edition, under their German versions for its German edition, etc., etc.
See all these important items above and other minor suggestions for revision in:

Did I confuse you? Anyway, the ultimate decisions must be made by the publishers of the translated editions. My whole point is that the translation process from the original Japanese edition is not different from that from the original U.S. edition to any other languages.
