The German Language
Audio: Guten Tag! Eins, zwei, drei. Danke schön.
- German (deutsch in German) is spoken in the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, parts of Switzerland and northern Italy, and in the German communities in the rest of the world.
- Linguistically, German belongs to the West Germanic language group which includes English, Dutch and Frisian as well as German. Modern Standard German is based on the Upper German dialect (Hochdeutsch) that is spoken in the southern and central parts of Germany, but more specifically East Central Germany.
- Charlemagne's Carolingian renaissance, Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press (1450), Martin Luther's translation of the Holy Bible to East Central German, Georg Schottel's and J.C. Gottshced's books on German grammar, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's and Friedrich von Schiller's literature, and Konrad Duden's German dictionary completed in 1902, all played big roles in establishing Modern Standard German.
- The German language uses, in addition to the 26-letter alphabet as used in the English language, umlaut A/a, O/o and U/u, written with two horizontal dots over these six characters (Ä/ä, Ö/ö & Ü/ü), and ß (pronounced "ess-tsett"), written like Greek beta, but often written as ss.
- The 1996 revision of the German writing system (see Informationen zur Rechtschreibreform) was agreed on August 1, 1996 by the representatives of 8 German speaking countries of Europe, that will used from 1998.

- Dutch, or Nederlands as officially called by the Dutch people, is spoken in the Netherlands and part of Belgium. (It is sometimes called Hollands after the most influential province.) Dutch is a direct descendant of Low German, but since the time of the completion of the State Bible (Staten-Bijbel) in New Dutch in 1619-37 and the works of poet-playwright Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679), it has been considered an independent language.
- The Dutch spoken in Belgium is also called Flemish (Vlaams). Afrikaans, used widely in South Africa, was derived from Dutch. Dutch influenced the vocabulary of Indonesian during the Netherlands' occupation.
- Dutch uses the same 26-letter alphabet as English. Its code page is the same as that of English.
- The Netherlands Keyboard resembles the U.K. English Keyboard, but allows easy input of both German and French.

- Spoken by the Jewish people, called the Ashkenazim, who moved from nortern Italy and northern France to Germany in the 9th century and later further moved to eastern Europe in the 13th century to avoid the Christian persecution in Western Europe. It is also used now in U.S.A. and Israel. Yiddish is based on Middle German, having borrowed some of its vocabulary from Hebrew and Aramaic, and later from the Slavic languages. It is written in the Hebrew alphabet.
- The word "Yiddish" comes from "yidish daytsh," meaning "Jewish German." See also "Ladino," a Spanish dialect, used by the Sephardim, the Jewish people from Spain.
