In addition to tennis that I had started playing during my student days and golf that I played during my stay in U.S., I enjoyed doing “auto camping” when our children were younger, in their elementary school. We loaded our station wagon with a tent and everything, and stayed in the mountain or by the seaside overnight. I liked to go to the mountains in Nagano Prefecture where I was brought up, but the late afternoon rainfall always annoyed us when we were preparing supper. In Wajima City in the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, we put up our tent on the seaside, a convenient site to buy food at the famous morning market in downtown Wjima. In U.S., we at one time started from New York State and went to Massachusetts. After visiting the Mayflower in Plymouth, we went to Cape Cod and did “clam digging” for our supper.

When I turned forty years old and thought that my physical strength would go downhill, I added two kinds of physical exercises to my repertoire: bicycle road racing and kayaking. I was interested in bicycle road racing because I loved watching the Tour de France bicycle races on TV. I first bought a Shimano bicycle, and then changed to a bicycle with Alan’s aluminum frame. I used to commute to my working location by bicycle, but I stopped that because it was dangerous to ride a bicycle in darkness on the way back home. Thanks to the training I received from Naoyuki Kinoshita, one of my colleagues at work, I even participated in a bicycle road race in Fukushima Prefecture, sponsored by the Daily Sports newspaper, and was placed before the finish line behind the women riders who had started 30 minutes later.

I enjoyed kayaking in my folding-type canoe made by Fujita, and paddled by myself in the Bay of Sagami from Enoshima to Oiso, Odawara and Kamakura. I also paddled with friends down the Nagara River from Seki City, Gifu Prefecture, to the Shinkansen bridge of Hashima City, with a one-night stay in a tent. While in U.S., I had chances to paddle down the Hudson River alone, and in the Long Island Sound off the coast of Rye, New York, with friends. (Written on 2014.07.02.)

休闲活动

　　我从学生时代开始打网球，在美国旅居的时候玩了高尔夫球，除此之外、在我的孩子上小学时，经常在假期中一起开车去露营。用车站的手推车装上帐篷和其他行李，全家人到山上或者去海边野营。虽然很喜欢登上陪伴了我整个孩提时代的长野县的山，但是午后晚些的时候在准备晚饭却下起了阵雨还是很吃不消的。在石川县能登半岛北部的轮岛的海岸上露营的时候，食材是在有名的早市上买的非常方便。在美国的时候，观看了从纽约出发开往麻萨诸塞州的五月花号后，在鳕鱼角搭建了帐篷，并在附近赶海，落潮时在海滩捕食鱼介等作为晚餐的食材。

　　因为总觉得40岁以后体力就会明显衰退，于是开始了两种运动。公路自行车比赛和划船竞赛。公路自行车比赛是源于看过环法自行车赛等开始有了浓厚的兴趣，一开始买了一辆禧马诺自行车，然后换成了艾伦公司的铝制构造的自行车。有一段时间热衷到连上下班都骑着它，但是由于冬天晚上回家的时候太暗才不得不放弃。后来在工作中后辈木下尚行先生的指导下不断练习，参加了由日刊运动主办的福岛公路自行车比赛，可是在最后阶段被晚30分钟出发的女子团队轻松超越了。

　　关于划船竞赛，我买了藤田公司制造的一艘折叠式皮划艇，有时一个人从附近的江岛出发沿着相模湾，朝向大磯、小田原、鎌倉的方向划行，有时和同伴一起贯穿长良川从岐阜县関市开始一直到羽島市新干线的铁桥漂流一晚。在美国的时候，曾一个人沿哈德遜河顺流而下，也曾和同伴在纽约周拉伊海岸（长岛海峡）划行。

余暇のスポーツ

学生時代から始めたテニス、米国滞在中にやったゴルフに加えて、子どもたちが小学校のころは、休みにはよくオート・キャンプをした。ステーションワゴン（バン）にテントやその他を積み込んで、山や海に行き、家族で野営をした。日本では自分が子供時代を過ごした長野県の山へ行くのが好きだったが、午後遅くに夕飯を準備するころ夕立があるので閉口した。石川県能登半島の輪島市では海岸でキャンプをして、食料は街中の有名な朝市で買えたので便利だった。米国ではニューヨーク州からマサチューセッツ州まで出かけてメイフラワー号を見た後、ケープ・コッドでテントを建てて近くで潮干狩りをして夕飯の食料にした。

40才になった時に、それ以降は体力が衰えていくばかりと思って、２種類のスポーツを始めた。自転車のロードレースとカヤックだった。

　自転車ロードレースはツール・ド・フランスなどを見ていて興味を持ったもので、始めシマノの自転車を、次にアラン社のアルミ・フレームで組み立ててもらった。ある時期は会社への行き帰りにもこれに乗って通うほど熱中していたが、冬の帰りは暗くて危険なので辞めた。仕事場の後輩木下尚行さんの指導で練習を重ねて、日刊スポーツ紙主催の福島ロードレースにも出たりしたが、終盤で30分遅れで出発した女子チームにあっさり抜かれてしまった。

　カヤックはフジタ・カヌーの折りたたみ式カヌーを買って、ひとりで近くの江の島から相模湾を漕いで大磯・小田原・鎌倉方面行ったり、仲間と長良川を岐阜県関市から羽島市の新幹線鉄橋まで一晩泊まりで漕いだりした。米国にいる時にはひとりでハドソン川を下ったり、仲間とニューヨーク州ライの海岸（ロングアイランド・サウンド）を漕いだりした。
