The Russian Language
Audio: Zdra'vstvuytye! Odyi'n', dva, tryi! Spasyi'ba!
- Russian is a language representive of the Eastern Slavic language group and is spoken by the people of the Russian Federation (Russia) and its neighboring states.
- The Russian alphabet is usually called the Cyrillic characters. In the 9th century, the Glagolitics were used in the first Slavic translations of the Christian Bible and liturgy, by the bothers Saint Methodius and Saint Cyril (Constantine before his death) of Constantinople, in Greater Moravia which included the present-day Bohemia and Moravia regions of Czeko, Slovakia, and part of Poland and Hungary. Their desciples were ousted to Bulgaria, and invented the Cyrillic alphabet, based on the Greek uncial characters. This Cyrillic alphabet continued to be used widely in the Middle Age in Russia and Ukraina as the only formal alphabet, and was used in the Church Slavonic language. It was simplified as the Civil alphabet at Czar Peter the Great's time, and further simplified during the Soviet period.
- The Russian language currently uses the following 33-letter alphabet:
These characters correspond to the following English sounds:
a b v g d ye yo zh z yi y k l m n o p r s t u f kh ts ch shch HM ui SM e yu ya
where the characters marked by HM (hard mark) and SM (soft mark) are used so that the preceeding consonants are pronounced, respectively, without and with y sound (palatalization).
