The Portuguese Language
Audio: Bom dia./Boa tarde. Um, dois, trêis. Obrigado/Obrigada.
- Portuguese is spoken in Portugal, the Azorean and Madeiran archipelagos owned by Portugal, Brazil, and Portugal's former colonies, such as Cabo Verde, Angola and Mozambique, in Africa, and Goa and Macao (Macau in Portuguese), in Asia. Goa was returned to India in 1961; and Macao was turned over to China on December 20, 1999.
In July, 1996, the Community of the Portuguese Speaking Countries, dubbed CPLP (A Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa), was established by seven countries. CPLP aims at the solidarity of the Portuguese-speaking countries and the promotion of Portuguese in the international arena.
- Like Spanish, Portuguese is a Romance language, born out of Vulgar Latin that had entered the Iberian peninsula under the Roman Empire. While the Islamic rule began in the 8th century, the Christian peole in Galicia, the northwestern part of the present-day Spain, who spoke "Galician Portuguese" as early as the 9th century, met and absorbed Mozarabic spoken by the Christians under the Moslem rule in Portugal, as they moved southward in the Christian Reconquest against the Arabs.
Portuguese became a common language of the area as the Kingdom of Portugal got established in 1143. Its language base was the region south of the Minho River, including Coinbra, the university town, and Lisbon, its capital city, as Portugal met its golden age of the world conquest after Henry (Enrique) the Navigator (1394-1460).
- The Portuguese language uses the same 26-letter alphabet as used by English, with accent marks. These accent marks are: the acute ('), grave (`), circumflex (^) and nasal (~ called "til") accents on the five vowels (A/a, E/e, I/i, O/o and U/u); the trema used on U/u; and the tilde ("cedilha") used on C/c. The accent marks are not omitted on the capital letters, unlike in French.
- The Portuguese introduced the gun and Christianity to the Far Eastern country of Japan in 1543. The Portuguese language added at that time to the Japanese vocabulary tempura (tempero), juban (gibão), kappa (capa), igirisu-jin (inglês) and other words.
- Portugal's monetary unit is escudo ($). One hundred centavos make one escudo.

The Portuguese Variations
After Pedro Álvares Cabral's discovery of Brazil in 1500 A.D., Portuguese became a common language there.
- Modern Brazilian Portuguese is slightly different from European Portuguese, such as atômico (closed vowel) in Brazilian Portuguese vs. atómico (open vowel) in European Portuguese, and atual (omission of unpronounced characters) vs. actual. It also borrowed many words from the languages of the African slaves, Spanish from the surrounding countries and Tupí, the aboriginal language. Of the two main urban accents in Brazil, Carioca of Rio de Janeiro is more similar to European Portuguese than Paulista of São Paulo.
- It is said to be conservative (i.e., to retain old pronunciation and expressions), but the comparison of the computers and the Internet related terminology seems to show that Brazilian Portuguese has boldly borrowed from U.S. English:

- Where is Little Brazil in Japan? "Seja bem vindo! Welcome!" It is in O-izumi Town, Gummma Prefecture. Japan has sent many immigrants to Brazil since the time of the Kasado-maru in 1908, so much so that 95 percent of the Portuguese language textbooks published in Japan are for learning Brazilian Portuguese. Recently, however, 180 thousand Japanese Brazilians have returned to work in Japan. Here in O-izumi Town, one tenth of the town's population of 42,000 are already foreigners, mostly Brazilians.
It is also reported that the circulation of the International Press, a Portuguese weekly magazine published in Tokyo, has exceeded 55,000 copies. (From an article in the evening edition of the Asahi Shimbun, Oct. 19, 1996, etc.)
- Brazil went through denominations in June, 1986, from cruzeiros (Cr$) to cruzado (Cz$), and in July, 1995, to real (R$). One hundred centavos make one real.

Brazilian Aboriginal Languages
The languages of the Brazilian aborigines, such as the Tupí-Guaraní and Xingu (pronounced "shi'ng-goo"), are to be described here, although they are not related linguistically to Portuguese. Guarani, together with Spanish, is the official language of Paraguay, and is also the Paraguayan monetary unit (100 centimos).

(A/a、E/e、I/i、O/o、U/u)上に; トレーマをU/uに; セディリャをC/cに追加します。

「Seja bem vindo!
