IBMPC and Compatibles

• IBM PC (Personal Computer) was announced in August, 1981, using Intel Corporation's 8088 microprocessor. MDA (640x200 dot display) and CGA (320x200 dot display in 4 colors).

• PC/XT (Extended Technology) using a hard disk was later introduced.

  Note: In Japan, 5550 Multistation using i8086 was introduced by IBM Japan, Ltd. NEC (Nippon Electric Co., Ltd.) started to sell PC-9801 using i8086 in 1982

• PC/AT (Advanced Technology) using i80286 and EGA (Enhanced Graphics Adapter, 640x350 dot display in 16 colors) display, etc., in 1984

• PS/2 (Personal System/2) using VGA (Video Graphics Array, 640x480 dot display in 16 colors) was introduced in 1987.

  Note: 101-key keyboard for U.S./Canada/Australia English and Russian, and 102-key keyboard for UK English and other European languages became common.

DOS

• MS-DOS was available for IBMPC in 1981. Its IBM version was called PC DOS. Digital Research Inc., later acquired by Novell, Inc., also provided DR DOS (or later Novell DOS) for IBMPC.

  Note: DOS offered for U.S./Canadian English in North America and U.K. English/French/German/Italian in Western Europe, an 8-bit "Extended ASCII" code table, later called the IBMPC code page or Code Page 437:

  Note: For Quebec, Canada, and Portugal, e.g., DOS provided Code Page 863 (Canadian French) and Code Page 860, respectively. Arabic and Hebrew are called bi-directional (BiDi) languages and different code pages are offered.

• DOS 2.0 for PC/XT and DOS 3.0 for PC/AT

  Note: Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese (Mainland China) and Traditional Chinese (Taiwan/Hongkong) uses a character encoding method called the Double Byte Character Set (DBCS). It allowed processing of 6,000 to 11,000 Kanji/Chinese/Hanja and native phonetic characters by two consecutive bytes, in addition to the base 128 English alphabet characters which are expressed in one byte.

• Network support in DOS 3.1. DOS 4.0 supporting the EMS (Enhanced Memory Specification) was shipped by IBM, but was not shipped by Microsoft except in Europe.

  Note: During the late 1980s, Code Page 850 (Multilingual Latin I) for the EC countries, Code Page 852 (Multilingual Latin II) for the Eastern Slavic languages, and Code Page 855 (Multilingual Cyrillic) for the Southern Slavic languages were defined and used.

  Note: In Japan, IBM DOS J4.0/V for VGA-based IBMPCs and compatibles became available in 1990. It provided Japanese capability on IBMPCs and compatibles, and U.S. English/Western European language modes by a SWITCH DOS command. Japanese DOS/V uses 106-key or 101-key keyboard.

• MS-DOS 6.2 and PC DOS 7.0 are the last versions of DOS from Microsoft and IBM, respectively. (July, 1995)

• DR-DOS originally by Digital Research, Inc. was later acquired by NetWare, and is now offered free by Caldera, Inc. as Caldera Open DOS from 1998.

Windows

• Windows 1.0 that is added to MS-DOS became available in 1983. Windows did not become popular until Windows 3.0 in 1990, which provided cooperative multitasking capability, and more stable Windows 3.1 in 1993, which offered TrueType outline fonts.

• Windows NT 3.5 is now offered by Microsoft Corporation. It requires more memory and harddisk space, but offers more robust system capabilities and Unicode support.

• Windows 95, a 32-bit multitasking system, became available in August, 1995. Its Japanese version now available since November, 1995. Windows 95's WordPad and MS Word for Windows 95 offer more multilingual capability.

  Note: Windows uses basically the same keyboard as DOS uses for each country, except that Windows 95 added three additional keys. See the keyboard layouts for Windows 1252 (ISO-8859-1/Latin 1)-based Western European languages, Windows 1250 (ISO-8859-2/Latin 2)-based Central European languages, and Windows 1251 (ISO-8859-5/Cyrillic)-based Eastern/Southern Slavic languages, in Nobue Yasumitsu's web.

• Microsoft made available Windows NT 4.0 in August, 1996, and plans to ship the next version of Windows 95 (code-named Nashville) also in 1996. The follow-on version of Windows 95 (code-named Memphis) and the next version of Windows NT (code-named Cairo) will debut in 1997. (Added in Sept., 1996)

  Microsoft's Global Input Methods 5.01 for Chinese T/S, Japanese and Korean

• Windows 2000, whose Preview RC2 (Release Candidate 2) and RC3 beta versions are widely distributed now, will be released on Feb. 18, 2000, offering more multilingual functions. A follow-on to Windows 98, called Windows Millennium, will be available sometime in 2000 and a follow-on to Windows 2000 for the entry users, code-named Neptune, is expected in 2001. (Added in Jan., 2000).

• Windows Me (Millennium Edition) became available on Sept., 23, 2000.

• Windows XP, an extension of Windows Me and Windows 2000, became available on Nov. 16, 2001. It is offered in two versions: Windows XP Home Edition, for personal users in general, and Windows XP Professional Edition, for high-end personal users and business users. Windosw XP Professional x64 Edition, a Windows XP version for the PCs using AMD Athlon 64, Intel EM64T or other 64-bit processor, became available in 2005. Microsoft's free support ended on April 8, 2014.

• Windows Vista, an upgrade to Windows XP, became available worldwide on Jan. 30, 2007. It is offered in five versions: Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, Business and Enterprise Editions.

• Windows 7 became available for end users on October 22, 2009. There are Starter (for pre-installed on low-cost PCs only), Home Basic (for developping countries only), Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate Editions. Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are included in one package. Microsoft's free support will end on Jan. 14, 2020.

• Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro became available worldwide on October 26, 2012. Microsoft's free support will end on Jan. 10, 2023. Windows 8.1 Update in April, 2014.

• Windows 10 was the name given to the next release of Windows, but not Windows 9. It was planned to support IoT (Internet of Things), smart phones, tablets, PCs, TVs and enterprise servers; screen sizes of 4 to 80 inches, etc. (from Windows Preview Event, held on 09/30/2014.) It became available, free of charge for upgrade, on July 29, 2015, initially for those who had participated in the pre-sales tests.

OS/2 Warp

• 16-bit OS/2 1.0 was announced by IBM and Microsoft for IBM PS/2 in 1987 and became available in December that year. Its Japanese version shipped in March, 1988. OS/2 required more memory and hardisk space than DOS, but offered programming capability beyond 640K bytes (up to 32M bytes in OS/2 1.0) and robust multitasking capability.

• 32-bit OS/2 2.0 from IBM was shipped in 1992. Object-oriented Worlplace Shell desktop function and PostScript outline fonts were added. It also offered complete DOS and Windows 3.0 emulations. Windows 3.1 emulation was added in OS/2 2.1 shipped in 1993.

  Note: OS/2 provides a primary code page and an alternate code page. Its code page contents are the same as those of the DOS code pages. OS/2 uses the same keyboard as DOS.

• OS/2 Warp V3 became available in October, 1994, its Japanese version in March, 1995. It is faster and comes with ready-to-use BonusPak OS/2 applications, such as IBM Works and Internet Connection. Its C/J/K versions support TrueType as well as PostScript outline fonts.

  The National Language Support versions of OS/2 Warp can be used effectively because they also include ready-to-use BonusPak applications in the national languages. DOS and Windows applications can also be used.

  Exceller Keyboard from Exceller Software supports 10 Western European languages. VoiceType Dictation from IBM is available in US English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and UK English.

• IBM made available OS/2 Warp 4 (code-named Merlin) in September, 1996, offering the new WarpCenter user interface, VoiceType speeach navigation and dictation, OpenDoc, OpenGL, Java for OS/2, etc. OS/2 Warp 4 is or will be soon available in the following 30 languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese/Simplified, Chinese/Traditional, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English/U.K., English/U.S., Finnish, French, French/Canadian, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese/Brazilian, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai and Turkish. (Oct., 1996)

• OS/2 Warp Server for e-business was shipped in May, 1999 (in June, 1999, in Japan). The world's major language versions can be installed from one CD-ROM.

Macintosh

• Macintosh, using Motorola 680x00 microprocessor, and System 1.0 became available in 1984. Mac offered the most advanced object-oriented desktop environment, and later became to be used often for desktop publishing and multimedia applications.

  Note: Mac System uses a yet different code page for each language set.

  Note: Apple Japan, Inc., offered KanjiTalk, an add-on software program to System x.x for Japanese language processing. From System 6.0, KanjiTalk has the same version number as System x.x.

• System 7 in June, 1991, including TrueType outline fonts and Balloon Help function

• WorldScript technology offered with System 7.1 in 1992 allowed the best multilingual environment:
  • WorldScript I for the simple Single Byte languages, such as the Western European languages, and the complex Single Byte languages, such as Arabic, Hebrew and Thai; and

  • WorldScript II for the Double Byte languages, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
• System 7.5, offering QuickDraw GX, etc., in 1994. Power Macintosh using PowerPC microprocessors started shipping in 1994.

  Note: The Language Kits, now including Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Hebrew and Japanese, adds these language capabilities to the International edition of System 7.x. The Korean and Indian (Devaganari and Gujarati) Language Kits to follow soon.

• Power Computing in U.S., Pioneer in Japan and UMAX in Taiwan now sell Macintosh compatibles. Motorola and IBM are said to be participating soon in the Mac compatibles market, directly or indirectly.

• Apple Computer plans to ship Mac OS 8, now code-named Rhapsody, in mid-1998, using technologies from NeXT Software which is being acquired. (Added in Jan., 1997)

• MacOS 9, released in Oct., 1999, now includes all Language Kits, which have been sold separately. (Added in Jan., 2000)

• Apple released on March 24, 2001, Mac OS X. It is a Unicode-based, pre-emptive multi-tasking OS, with seven languages in one CD-ROM. It also includes Mac OS 9.1 in the package.

Workstations

Under UNIX, "Mule" (Multilingual Enhancement to GNU Emacs) is famous as an editor which handles multilingual processing.

IBMPCと互換機、NEC PC-9800シリーズ

DOS

• NEC PC-9800用のMS-DOS自身には日本語以外の言語処理する機能はなくて、「KOA-TechnoMate」(高電社)などのような多言語用アプリケションや、中国語、韓国語の処理には、外字(180文字まで)を利用した中国語FEP、韓国語FEPという形で利用が行なわれています。

• IBMおよびマイクロソフトから発売されているDOS/Vでは、日本語DOSモードでSWITCHというDOSコマンドを使うと英文DOSモードに入り、そこで英文DOS用のソフトや、コードページを共有して使えるフランス語、ドイツ語などのソフトが使えます。中国語、韓国語の処理には、外字(1880文字まで)を利用した中国語FEP、韓国語FEPという形で利用されています。

Windows

• Windows 3.1の多言語処理用環境およびアプリケーションには、「UniType 1.6」(Gamma Productions)、「Accent 2.0」(Accent Software)、「Key Mapper for Windows」(Data-Cal)、「TwinBridge for Windows」(TwinBridge Software)、「Chinese Writer」・「Korean Writer」(高電社)、「Nihao Winツール」(クリエイト大阪)などが発売されています。

• Windows 95日本語版では、CD-ROM版に限定された多言語用機能が入っています。これをインストールするには、デスクトップの「マイコンピュータ」で「アプリケーションの追加と削除」を選び、「Windowsファイル」のファイルの種類一覧で多国語サポートの項目にチェックを付けて詳細を選択すると、「ギリシャ語」、「キリル言語」、「中央ヨーロッパ言語」が出るので、必要なものをチェックするとフォントがローディングされます。

  次にデスクトップに戻り「キーボード」で「言語」を選び、「追加」で例えばロシア語を指定すると、ここでロシア語用キーボード・ドライバーがローディングされます。ロシア語の例を参照。現在のところ、Windows 95日本語版に付属の「WordPad」と、別売の「Word for Windows 95」と「Works for Windows 95」の表計算部分で多言語処理ができるようです。

• Windows 2000のプレビューRC2 (Release Candidate 2)とRC3が広く配布されていて、2000年2月18日に発売になる予定で、多くの多言語機能を含んでいます。Windows 98の後継として、Windows Millenniumが2000年に、Windows 2000のエントリーユーザー版（コード名Nettune）が2001年に出てくる予定です。(2000年1月に追記).（2000年1月に追加）

• Windows Me (Millennium Edition)が、2000年9月23日に販売開始。

• Windows XPは、Windows MeとWindows 2000の拡張で、2001年4月24日に日本語版Beta 2が始まり、11月19日に一般の個人ユーザー向けのWindows XP Home Editionと、ハイエンド個人ユーザーとビジネス・ユーザー向け Professional Edition として発売されました。AMD Athlon 64、Intel EM64Tなど64ビット・プロセッサー使用のパソコン用に、Windows XP Professional x64 Editionも2005年に発売されました。2014年4月8日で、サポート終了。

• Windows Vistaは、Windows XPの後継で、2007年1月30日に世界的に発売され、Windows Vista Home Basic Edition、Home Premium Edition、Ultimate Edition、Business Edition、Enterprise Editionの５つのバージョンがあります。

• Windows 7が2009年10月22日に一般向けに発売されました。Starter（低コストPC向けプレインストールのみ）、Home Basic（新興国向けのみ）、Home Premium、Professional、Ultimateエディションがあり、32・64ビット両版が同梱されている。2020年1月14日に、サポート終了予定。

• Windows 8とWindows 8 Proが2012年10月26日に世界的に発売された。「Modern UI」（旧称：Metro UI、UI = User Interface）が大々的に使用され、デスクトップに大きなタイル（アイコン）が並ぶ。画面右端からのスワイプで表示される「Charm」では検索、メニューへの移動、シャットダウンなどのシステム機能が、画面の上端または下端からスワイプで表示される「Application Command」ではWindows Storeへの操作が行なえるようになっている。（同時に発売されたWindows 8 RTはARM Processorを利用した端末向けで、一般販売されない。）2023年1月10日で、サポート終了予定。Windows 8.1 Updateは2014年4月に。

• Windows 10が次のWindowsの名称で、Windows 9ではない。IoT（Internet of Things）からスマートフォン、タブレット、PC、テレビ、エンタープライズサーバまで；4型から80型の画面サイズなどを、包括的にサポートするように計画されていた。 (2014.09.30. Windows Preview Eventでの話し） 2015年7月29日にUpgradeは無料で、プリセールス・テストに参加した人たちを始めとして発売された。

OS/2 Warp

IBM社のOS/2 Warpは堅牢な、マルチタスクOSです。

• OS/2 1.0は1987年にIBMとMicrosoftがPS/2およびPS/55用に共同で発表し、英語版はその年の末、日本語版は翌年3月に出荷されました。DOSよりメモリーやハードディスク要領などの資源を必要としましたが、640Kバイトというメモリー制限を越えて利用でき(OS/2 1.0では32Mバイトまで)、堅牢なマルチタスク機能も備えていました。

• 32ビットOS/2 2.0は1992年にIBMから出荷されました。オブジェクト指向のワークプレース・シェルがデスクトップに採用され、PostScriptアウトライン・フォントも提供されました。DOSおよびWindows 3.0エミュレーションも利用できるようになりました。1993年に発売されたOS/2 2.1ではWindows 3.1が使えます。

  注:OS/2では主コードページと副コードページが使えます。コードページの内容はDOSのコードページの内容と同じです。キーボードもDOSの時と同じにしています。

• OS/2 Warp V3は1994年10月に発売され、日本語版の発売は翌年3月でした。OS/2 Warpはより高速になり、付属のBonusPakに各種OS/2アプリケーション(IBM Works、Internet Connectionなど)があります。中国・日本・韓国版ではPostScriptフォントの他にTrueTypeもサポートしています。

  各国版のOS/2 Warpをには付属のBonusPakも翻訳されていますので、これを使うと便利。また「OS/2 Warp with WIN-OS/2 - 日本語版」には、OS/2、Windows 3.1日本語版、Windows 3.1英語版、DOS/V、英文DOS (PC DOS)が入っているので、これらの機能も総合的に使えます。

  西欧言語用にキーボードを整えるには「Exceller Keyboard」(米国Exceller Software)があります。ディクテーション・ソフト「VoiceType Dictation」(IBM、米国英語・英国英語・フランス語・ドイツ語・イタリア語・スペイン語版がある)のようなユニークなものも出ています。

• IBM社はOS/2 Warp 4 (コードネームMerlin)を1996年9月に発売しました。新しいユーザー・インターフェースWarpCenter、VoiceTypeスピーチ・ナビゲーションとディクテーション、OpenDoc、OpenGL、Java for OS/2などが提供しています。OS/2 Warp 4は、次の30か国語で販売中または販売予定です:アラビア語(Arabic)、イタリア語(Italian)英語:英国(U.K. English)英語:米国(U.S. English)、オランダ語(Dutch)、カタロニア語(Catalan)、韓国語(Korean)、ギリシャ語(Greek)、スウェーデン語(Swedish)、スペイン語(Spanish)、スロベニア語(Slovenian)、タイ語(Thai)、チェコ語(Czech)、中国語:簡体字(Simplified Chinese)、中国語:繁体字(Traditional Chinese)、デンマーク語(Danish)、ドイツ語(German)、トルコ語(Turkish)、日本語(Japanese)、ノルウェー語(Norwegian)、ハンガリア語(Hungarian)、フィンランド語(Finnish)、フランス語(French)、フランス語:カナダ(Canadian French)、ブルガリア語(Bulgarian)、ポーランド語(Polish)、ポルトガル語(Portuguese)、ポルトガル語:ブラジル(Brazilian Portuguese)、ヘブライ語(Hebrew)、ロシア語(Russian)。(1996年10月)

• OS/2 Warp Server for e-businessが1999年5月（日本では6月）出荷されました。各国語版が１つのCD-ROMでインストール可能です。

• System 7.1から搭載されたWorldScript IIに対応したソフトなら、日本語も含めてあらゆる言語の混在が可能で、「AllScript」(マキエンタプライズ)、「SoloWriter WorldView」(マーキュリー・ソフトウェア・ジャパン)、「Waltz Word」などが発売されています。

• アップル社からChinese Language Kit(中国語簡体字・繁体字を含む)、Japanese Language Kitがすでに発売されています。Arabic Language Kit、Cyrillic Language Kit(キリル文字を用いるロシア語、その他言語用)、Hebrew Language Kitも最近発売され、近々Korean Language Kit、Indian Language Kits (Devaganari、Gujaratiなど)も発売予定のようです。

• 米国のPower Computing、日本のパイオニア、台湾のUMAXがすでにMacintosh互換機を販売しています。MotorolaとIBMも直接あるいは間接的に、Mac市場に近々乗り出すといわれています。

• アップル社はMac OS 8 (現在のコドネームRhapsody)を、NeXT Softwareの技術を使って、1998年中ごろに発売する予定です。(1997年1月に追加)

• MacOS 9が1999年10月に発売され、これまで別売のLanguage Kitsがすべて入っています。（2000年1月に追加）

• アップルは、2001年3月24日からMac OS Xの販売を開始しました。Unicodeをベースにした、プリエンプティブ・マルチタスクＯＳで、7つの言語が1枚のCD-ROMに収められていて、Mac OS 9.1のCD-ROMも入っています。

ワークステーション

ワークステーションとは、インテル社の原稿製品ラインであるCISC(Complex Instruction Set Computing)技術に対してRISC(reduced Instruction Set Computing)技術のチップを使ったより高速のコンピュータのことです。UNIX、AIX、HP-UX、Solaris、Linuxや386BSDなどのパーソナルUNIXなどを搭載します。

UNIX下では「Mule」(Multilingual Enhancement to GNU Emacs)が多言語処理のできるエディタとして有名です。

• 友人の竹村譲くんなどの勧めで、私は2000年1月に電池式のIBM WorkPad 30J（Palm ComputingのＯＥＭ）黒色・２ＭＢを買い（25,000円）、すぐ秋葉原のマスター（03-3526-5090）でメモリーを８Mへアップグレードを行ない、通常のカレンダー・電話帳・To Do・ノートだけでなく、「わいわい！外国語v2.2」や「キリスト教聖書・携帯版」などいろいろと利用しました。2002年2月には充電式のPalm m505（Palm OS 4.0）カラー・８ＭＢとＳＤカード（１６ＭＢ）とDocument ToGoソフト（Microsoft Office互換）に買い替え（32,800円）、電話帳へ入れるのがめんどうなリストは表計算に入れて使っています。アスキーからオンラインソフト集「Palmシリーズ、最強化パック１５００」（2,800円）が出ていて、私のわいわい！外国語v2.2も載っています。

• 2003年にはPalm Computing社が日本を撤退したので、2004年1月にSony Clie PEG-TJ25（PalmのＯＥＭ、18,300円）青色・１６ＭＢに乗り換え、しばらくしてMemory Stick 128KBも買い足しました。同年８月に友人の桝谷鋭（さとし）さんに紹介されてCJK OSを谷野典之さんのインターネットページで詳しく見て、すぐCJK OS 4.6 for Palm OS 5をDu YongTao's Studio（杜永濤）からダウンロードして、中国語簡体字をテストしたあと、買って（$28.00）、メモ帳に中国語の詩やお祈りを入れて利用しています。同じ画面に日本語と中国語を混合することはできないが、このソフトの著者の杜永濤さんは英語で質問するとすぐ返事をくれます。（例えば、中国語の「旅」や「女」は通常パソコンでやっている「lv」、「nv」ではなく、それぞれ「lu:」、「nu:」と入れる、など）(2004.12.18.)
