A Stroll in Oiso Town (By Yoshi Mikami)

COMPETITION OF LUXURY LINERS AT YOKOHAMA PORT
From the Asahi Shimbun, May 11, 1989, Shonan Edition
At Yokohama Port where Britain's luxuary line Queen Elizabeth II (66,450 tons)
is piered as a hotel ship, two large passenger liners of the Soviet Union
joined. The South Pier where these luxuary liners are moored was busy with
the sightseers who cames over from the Yokohama Exotic Expo (YES). On May 11
when one of the Soviet ships leave, Japan's new, largest luxuary liner Fuji
Maru (23,500 tons) is expected to arrive. With two other ocean-cruising
passenger liners arriving this month, the South Pier is enjoying its busy time
which we have not seen for a long time.
The two Soviet ships are: the Alexander Pushkin (20,502 tons), which came in
at 8:00am with 500 Australian sightseers on its China-Japan cruise, and the Rus
(the former Konstantin Chernenko), which arrived at 3:00 pm with 70 European
passengers on its scheduled Yokohama-Nakhotka line. The illuminated lights of
these two Soviet liners and the QE2 delighted the sightseers who visited the
South Pier last night. The Rus will depart on May 11 at noon, and the Fuji
Maru will arrive at 2:15 pm.
Later this month, West Germany's luxuary liner Europa (33,819 tons) will arrive
on May 14 at 8:00 am and Britain's passenger liner Sea Princes (27,670 tons) on
May 19 at 1:00 pm. The passenger cruiser boom of Yokohama Port will continue
for some time.

Note: This is a partial list of the fireworks displays this summer in and near
Kanagawa Prefecture. The rain dates are usually the following days. It
is impossible to make such a list because every major city in Japan will
hold a fireworks display, especially in the coastal areas. The above data
were taken from the Asahi Shimbun 7/20/89, the Daily Yomiuri 7/21/89 and
other sources. Yoshi Mikami 8/2/89
