Iris

Summary by Sysop: 横須賀市立「しょうぶ園」は、京浜急行衣笠駅から
行きます。
It's in the middle of the rainy season and time to enjoy the Japanese
irises ("shohbu"). This morning, taking advantage of the rain, we
went to the new Yokosuka Shiritsu Shohbu-En (Municipal Irises
Garden). It's a fairly large park (3.5 hectars) and has about
450,000 irises of 412 kinds. They also planted about 1,300
rhododendrons ("shakunage"), which will come into bloom in
July/August.
Learned something about the shohbu. It was "improved" during the Edo
Era from the "no-hanashohbu." (Shohbu, kaitsubata, no-hanashohbu,
hanashohbu and ayame belong to the same family.) Edo, Ise
(Matsuzaka) and Higo (Kumamoto) are the three places where this
improvement was done. "Aichi no kagayaki" is a yellow iris. The
irises in the Garden are in full bloom this and next weekends.
We went there by car, 25 kilometers, 45 minutes from the south area
of Fujisawa City. The direction is: go west and south on Route 134
past Zushi City; as you enter Hayama City, turn left at Hayama Town
Agricultural Cooperative ("Hayama-machi Nohkyoh"); at Ikegami
Juhjiro, Yokosuka City, turn right into a busy street toward Kinugasa
Station of Keikyuh Railroad; turn right at Ikegami Elementary School
sign; go up the hill about one kilometer. If you are looking in the
map, this Garden is in Abekura-machi, Yokosuka City; if you are
driving south on Yokohama-Yokosuka Expressway, you'd first pass
Yokosuka Interchange, see this Garden and then Kinugasa Park on left,
and reach Kinugasa Interchange.
As a child, I used to go to the irises garden attached to Meiji
Shrine, Tokyo. Which other irises gardens are there in this area,
under the BIG BLUE skies and near the BIG BLUE seas? (Oh well, under
the gray skies, in the rainy season...)

Iris is a godess of the rainbow. So Iris flower are tinged
with various colors that the sky appears. Sky-blue, purple
of a thundercloud in evening, light yellow of the dawn, etc.
Iris is loved in the West, too. John Gerald, a famous gardener
in 16th century, wrote that "Fleur de Luce"(the crest of French
royal family) was Iris.
Iris had been known as an effective herb since the Egyptian Era.
Later Iris flower had became to be loved, too.
Hanashoubu(Iris kaempferi) and Shaga (I. japonica) was informed
the West by a German doctor, Engelbert Kempel(1651-1716). He
found the Japanese Iris when he stayed in China. "Kaempferi"
results from his name.
Reginald Farer(1880-1920), a gardener about 1900 and a specialist
of aquatic plants, wrote "Japanese Iris is a noble plant, because
it dislike the planting with other species. In Japan, Irises are
planted in exclusive beds, or at corners of streams or borders of
ponds where there are no rival."

We went to Four Seasons Woods Park (Shiki no Mori Koen) in Yokohama
last night after Yokohama Astronomical Assiciation meeting. It began
to rain about six o'clock, but at about 7:15 pm we could see many
Genji-botaru flying near the woods and playing with their mates near
the many streams in the park. It was a beautiful sight! The
fireflies were just blinking their lights in tandem, flying as if
they were dancing to slow symphony music!
Shiki no Mori Koen is one of Kanagawa Prefecture's several parks. It
is a five minutes' walk south from Midori-ku Hall, near Nakayama
Station of JR Yokohama Line. There is a special paved walk from the
eastern side of the Kuyakusho. On the map, it's on the southern tip
of Midori-ku, bodering on Asahi-ku, adjacent to Hikari-ga-Oka
Elementary School and Hikari-ga-Oka Danchi.
According to a 1983 census, there were about 30 firefly places in the
city of Yokohama. Many of them were in Midori-ku. Go to this
prefectural park this month to watch genji-botaru; and in July August
to enjoy heike-botaru, smaller fireflies.
